Voice Acting for Animation vs Live Action: What Changes

Voicing an animated character is a different job to voicing a live-action one, even when the material is similar. Animation exaggerates everything — expression, timing, physicality — and the voice needs to match that heightened world.

Bigger physical choices

Because there's no live actor's face and body doing half the storytelling, the voice has to carry more of the character's physicality — how they move, how big their reactions are, how their body would feel saying this line.

Timing works differently

Animation is often recorded before final timing is locked, so voice actors need to give directors options — different paces, different emphases — that editors and animators can work with later.
